Dr. Alison Woodworth, Director of the Esoteric Chemistry lab at Vanderbilt Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Pathology, will give a presentation about the field of Laboratory Medicine and Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Woodworth will provide information about where and how to apply to Clinical Chemistry postdoctoral fellowship programs. Clinical Chemistry is a sub-specialty of Clinical Pathology, which is the application of biochemistry, molecular biology, and hematology to the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of human disease. Clinical Chemistry has traditionally involved analysis of blood, uring, and other body fluids using biochemical, immunoassay, molecular biological and mass spectrometry technology. These analyses directly impact patient care in a number of ways including: confirmation of a diagnosis, determining prognosis, and monitoring treatment. The need for Clinical Chemists is ever increasing and the opportunities are many in areas such as academic medical centers, community hospitals, in vitro diagnostics, and pharmaceutical companies. The constant excitement of a job in clinical chemistry, combined with the numerous job opportunities and ever-increasing salary make it an attractive career path for young scientists.
