| In this proposal we describe
(1) a group of 116 faculty from the biomedical science
departments of Vanderbilt University and Meharry Medical
College who are actively engaged in research in the
overall areas of the training grant goals, (2) a mechanism
involving the Vanderbilt Interdisciplinary Graduate
Program (IGP), for recruiting and identifying student
of high caliber who wish to be trained in this area
and (3) a high degree of support for these activities
from the central administration, documented in terms
of making available excellent research facilities and
of supporting financially the innovative IGP. The training
program includes broad didactic coverage in the target
areas, rigorous in-depth research experience in the
preceptor's laboratories, elective courses for more
specialized exposure in the chosen area of research,
as well as regular journal club and ongoing research
review sessions. The administrative structure of the
program is described, as well as processes for program
review, minority recruitment and exposure of the students
to formal course in the responsible conduct of research.
This program and grant submission is through the collaborative
efforts of the Vanderbilt University - Meharry Medical
College Alliance. |
