PowerPoint Set-Up Guide

The following is a step-by-step guide for creating your poster "palette" using PowerPoint. Before making your poster, find out if the meeting you are attending has any size guidelines or restrictions.

  1. Click File >> New >> Blank Presentation >> (blank lay-out)
  2. Click File >> Page Setup >> (enter poster size). The size you choose should follow conference guidelines and be an appropriate size for your data. The maximum dimension that Powerpoint allows for height and width is 56". In addition, our paper roll is 42" wide, so although your poster can be up to 56" long (PowerPoint's maximum), the width must be 42" or less (see Technical Specifications for an illustration).
  3. Turn on guidelines to help you line up your figures and text boxes. Click View >> Guides to display a moveable horizontal and vertical guideline. These lines will NOT appear in your poster, but will help you line up text boxes and figures. If you're using a PC, you can also turn guidelines on and off by right-clicking on the mouse.
  4. Turn on rulers to help you maintain a 1.5" margin of white space on all sides of your poster. Click View >> Ruler to display the rulers. PC users can turn rulers on and off by right-clicking the mouse.
  5. Leaving a 1-1.5" margin on all sides, create your poster as you would a slide using the guidelines outlined in the Advice & Tips section.
